WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Participants will have the opportunity to develop/improve the ability to handle the needle with ultrasound guidance by practicing on biological models made of meat with tendons inserted for realism. Instructors will offer essential information about US settings, clinical tips and advice for safe and effective practice of ultrasound guided regional anesthesia.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Participants will have the opportunity to practice on volunteer identification of injection points for most popular blocks used for anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia of trunk and ultrasound use in neuraxial procedures. WS will include, without being limited to: paravertebral, PECS I&II, TAP – classical and subcostal, Quadratus lumboris, erector spinae, spinal anaesthesia, ilioinguinal, iliohypogastic, and rectus sheath. Trainers will be happy to share their expertise, to answer questions and to provide clinical tips.

Workstations will include, without being limited to: trunk blocks, sympathetic blocks, fluoroscopic vs ultrasound guidance (fluoroscopic will not be demonstrated, only explained), cervical superficial, suprascapular, axillar, facet thoracic, facet lumbar. Trainers will be available to share their experience, and the will be happy to answer questions and to offer clinical advices.

Course Structure

Block 1. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Role of ultrasound in trauma and regional anaesthesia.
  • Key POCUS protocols (airway, gastric, ocular).
  • Significance of RA in trauma management.

Block 2. POCUS in Trauma (30 minutes)

  • Ocular ultrasound: optic nerve sheath diameter, retinal detachment, vitreous
  •  
  • Tracheal ultrasound: anatomical landmarks, intubation verification, airway trauma.
  • Gastric ultrasound: assessment of aspiration risk.
  • Hands-on practice.

Block 3. Core Regional Anaesthesia Blocks (60 minutes)

  • Brachial plexus block (interscalene/supraclavicular).
  • Chest wall block (erector spinae plane).
  • Fascia iliaca block, Sciatic nerve block anterior and lateral approach
  • Method: trainer demonstration + supervised participant practice.

Block 4. Clinical Integration (15 minutes)

  • Case 1: Traumatic brain injury → Ocular ultrasound + limb block.
  • Case 2: Chest wall trauma → Tracheal ultrasound + erector spinae block.
  • Case 3: Femoral fracture → Gastric ultrasound + Fascia iliaca block, Sciatic nerve block anterior and lateral approach.

Block 5. Wrap-Up & Q&A (5 minutes)

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Immerse yourself in the Orthopaedic Clinic for a half of day to observe regional anaesthesia activity. Content may vary depending on the scheduled surgeries and may include the blocks routinely being practiced in clinic: upper limb (interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, and axillary), lower limb (femoral, adductor canal, saphenous, sciatic, and ankle). The trainers will not be charged with supplementary work in clinic, so they will be available for the participants the whole time, to demonstrate and answer questions. In the less likely situation that the scheduled surgeries do not require ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia, the demonstrations will be performed with recorded images.
